International collaboration pushes the frontiers on Global Sustainable Lake Management
Since the Lahti Lakes 2024 Symposium, Finland, an international group of researchers and practitioners have worked to develop a new approach to Sustainable Lake Restoration, outlined in this new paper. The approach highlights opportunities to:
Integrate nutrient recycling (circularity),
Deliver broader socio-economic impacts, and
Enhance public engagement in co-developing restoration goals, targets and monitoring.
The International Symposium on Lake Restoration, Lahti Lakes 2024, marked a significant shift in thinking about how countries manage lakes for biodiversity and society.
Through policy and financing transformations, engagement and close stakeholder collaborations, experts at the symposium called for:
Better understanding of the linkages between eutrophication and other environmental problems
Monitoring programs to demonstrate broader restoration benefits
Effective system analysis tools
Sustainable nutrient recycling measures and accurate realization
Thorough documentation for life-cycle assessments
The uPcycle Team are proud to partner in this work with other major research projects including FERRO, FutureLakes, ProCleanLakes, Our Lakes Our Future working together to provide valuable insights into practical approaches for sustainable lake management across the world.
